Our Ponies

Star

StarStar came to us from a horse dealer's yard. She had been with six owners in a few weeks. All had tried to force her into submission and she was badly beaten. Whereas some ponies have their spirit broken by cruelty, Star had become vicious and would attack anyone who came near her. She has adjusting well and can now be handled, she cannot however be trusted as bad memories can trigger a personality change in the wink of an eye. It is very unlikely that Star can ever leave the centre.

Star is available to Sponsor. Sponsors help provide tender Loving care for Star & friends for just 0.50p per week.

Lukie

LukieLukie's pregnant mum was used to settle a debt between men. She was moved to a tiny allotment. Soon she had eaten all the greenery and although local people fed her scraps it was not enough and she started to lose weight. She gave birth to her foal but was too weak to survive. He was left nuzzling his mum's dead body for some time before he was brought to us, his spirit broken, dehydrated, lice-ridden and thin. Now he's a fine black 'Section A' Welsh mountain pony; full of life

Lukie is available to Sponsor. Sponsors help provide tender Loving care for Lukie & friends for just 0.50p per week.

Jake

JakeJake was a rented Pit Pony. He was owned by a company who had lots of Pit Ponies working in small private mines in the Welsh coalfields. For £25 per week he would come to work in your coal mine! No rules, no instruction book, just pay up on time or we will send the lads round. He last worked at a colliery up in the forestry overlooking Glyneath. However the price of coal was in decline and he was sold as a nice quiet riding pony. He was found eventually working in a Trekking Centre where he was proving unsuitable as he would not canter and was not keen to trot.

They thought him lazy and wanted him gone. However Pit Ponies soon learn that to trot, canter or gallopin the colliery is almost certain injury or death. Jake worked with Pit Pony Dick at the colliery hauling coal from deep underground through the maze of tunnels to the surface.

Dylan

DylanDylan was a rented Pit Pony. He was owned by a company who had lots of Pit Ponies working in small private mines in the Welsh coalfields. For £25 per week he would come to work in your coal mine! No rules, no instruction book, just pay up on time or we will send the lads round. However the price of coal was in decline and he was sold as a nice quiet riding pony.

Unfortunately he was far too strong for his rider. To a Pit Pony running is almost certain death or injury. Like most Pit Ponies Dylan was very reluctant to trot or canter.

Beauty

BeautyPit Pony Beauty worked in The Bush Nr Crumlin, Werntarw and Pant-y-gasseg collieries amongst others. She is a traditional Welsh Cob with lots of feather and a chunky build. She stands about 14:2 hands high. She is a very placid nature and shares her stable with little Buttons. She carries the scars from her time in the pits. She has some serious damage to her neck & mane in the past. It doesn't seem to trouble her now. Pit Pony Dylan carries a flame for her. However she doesn't seem to feel the same for him.

Mango

MangoMango came to the Centre following a call one frosty January. Four small ponies were kept in a field by a man behind the prestigious HTV studios in Cardiff. Though they had a little hay to eat they did not have any water. Their water trough was dry. The ground was frozen hard and any natural water was frozen to ice. The access lane was very slippery. The owner had not made provision for the bad weather and the ponies were in a desperate situation. Sadly two ponies had already died in the field by the time we were called. The owner tearfully signed the ponies over and promised never to keep any more horses or ponies.

Iggy

IggyIggy is a Liver Chestnut part bred section "B" Cob pony gelding. He suffered a fractured shoulder when he was only 8 months old. Having his weight on his one good leg at such a young age caused the leg to bow. Corrective shoeing has sorted the problem.

It has taken a long time for Iggy to get properly back on his feet. He has settled in here and is a bit of a mischief and he is always playing and having fun with the other small ponies here at the Centre.
